Biography
Memorial services for George A. Becker, 89, of Northrop and Fairmont, MN, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 20, at St. James Lutheran Church in Northrop. Burial following the service in the St. James Lutheran Church Cemetery with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post #36 and the Martin County VFW Post #1222. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
George passed away on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont.
George Albert Becker was born on September 16, 1923 in Martin County, the son of Albert and Ellen (Drews) Becker. He attended St. James Lutheran Parochial School and then Granada High School, graduating in 1942. George entered the U.S. Navy on Jan. 12, 1944 and served mostly in the Philippine Islands. George was honorably discharged on Nov. 30, 1946 and returned to farm in Rutland Township. On April 10, 1947, George was united in marriage to Lorraine Hendricksen of Truman. They raised a family and farmed in Rutland Township for many years. After George retired from farming he drove truck for Rosen’s. George and Lorraine celebrated 63 years of marriage before Lorraine passed away on August 19, 2010.
George was a lifetime member of St. James Lutheran Church in Northrop and served on the Rutland Township Board. He was a member of the Martin County V.F.W. Post 1222 and former member of the Schwieger – Kahler American Legion in Northrop and the Granada American Legion. George proudly participated in hundreds of military honor guards over the years.
Left to cherish his memory include 5 children, LuAnn Jewell of St. Augustine, FL, Drusilla Egeness and her husband, Albert, of Truman, Glenn Becker of Granada, Gene Becker and his wife, Candy, of Granada, Galen Becker of Buffalo, MN; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 3 sisters-in-law, LaVerna Boler of Winnebago, Mrs. Rudy Hendricksen of Truman and Mrs. Eddie Hendricksen of Truman; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Albert and Ellen Becker and wife, Lorraine, George was also preceded in death by one son-in-law, Bill Jewell; brother, Werner Becker; sisters, Loretta Becker, Ruth Wokasch and Frieda Williams.
