Biography

Funeral Service for Helen M. Bergt, 100, of Fairmont, MN, will be 1:30 P.M., Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Burial will be following the service in the Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. Visitation will be Monday, December 10, 2012, from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Helen passed away on Friday, December 7, 2012, at the Lutz Wing of Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont.
Helen Martha Augusta Lafrentz, daughter of Albert Ludwig Lafrentz (1885-1955) and Alvena (Goslar) Lafrentz (1885-1984) was born on a farm west of Charter Oak, IA, on December 4, 1912. She had one sister, Erma Minnie (Lafrentz) Borcherdt.
Helen was baptized at her home on January 6, 1913. She was confirmed on April 5, 1925, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ute, IA. Her confirmation memory verse was Genesis 15:1.
Helen moved at an early age from the farm to Ute, IA, where her father was engaged in farming, selling insurance, real estate and operating the Star Theater. After high school, she worked as a telephone operator.
Helen was married to Harold Martin Bergt at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ute, IA, on October 15, 1943. Her husband was a Lutheran school teacher and Principal at the Lutheran school in Ute. They moved to Coffeyville, KS, in the summer of 1944, to Hastings, NE, in 1946, and Fremont, NE, in 1959. After Harold’s retirement, they moved to Fairmont, MN, in 1983.
Helen is survived by her husband, Harold Bergt (Fairmont, MN); three children, Carolyn Bergt (St. Louis, MO), Richard Bergt (Springfield, IL), and Gerald Bergt (Fairmont, MN). Janice Borcherdt, niece (Fairmont, MN), daughter-in-law, Pauline Bergt (Fairmont, MN). Grandchildren, David and Amanda Bergt (Fairmont, MN), Jered and Christine Sprecher (Knoxville, TN), Jonathan and Natasha Bergt (Woodbury, MN), Aaron Bergt (Fairmont, MN), Kathleen Bergt (Fairmont, MN), and Timothy Bergt (Springfield, IL). Great-Grandchildren, Joshua, Hannah and Caleb Bergt (Fairmont, MN), Levi, Ezra and Avram Sprecher (Knoxville, TN), and Luke and Lillian Bergt (Woodbury, MN).
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Alvena Lafrentz; brother-in-law, Roy Borcherdt; sister, Erma Borcherdt; and a daughter-in-law, Sharon Bergt.
Helen reached the age of 100 years on December 4, 2012. She will be remembered as a devoted, loving wife and mother.
