LEONARD E. HOYT, 74, of Ceylon, MN

Funeral services for Leonard E. Hoyt, 74, of Ceylon, MN, formerly of Superior, WI, will be Friday, November, 21, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Fairmont. Visitation will be Thursday, November 20, 2008, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Services will also be held on Saturday, November, 22, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Duluth, MN, with burial following the service in the Gordon Cemetery in Gordon, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the time of service at the church.  Leonard E. Hoyt began his heavenly mission on November 18, 2008. Len passed away at the Fairmont Medical Center in Fairmont of a rare disease, primary systemic amyloidosis (AL). The disease overtook his body but not his spirit.

LEONARD E. HOYT, 74, of Ceylon, MN

Funeral services for Leonard E. Hoyt, 74, of Ceylon, MN, formerly of Superior, WI, will be Friday, November, 21, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Fairmont. Visitation will be Thursday, November 20, 2008, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Services will also be held on Saturday, November, 22, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Duluth, MN, with burial following the service in the Gordon Cemetery in Gordon, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the time of service at the church.  Leonard E. Hoyt began his heavenly mission on November 18, 2008. Len passed away at the Fairmont Medical Center in Fairmont of a rare disease, primary systemic amyloidosis (AL). The disease overtook his body but not his spirit.  Leonard was born on May 28, 1934, in Wascott Township, Douglas County, WI, the son of Elmer and Edith (Howes) Hoyt. He lived in Wisconsin all of his life until moving to rural Ceylon, MN, in 2000.  Len worked 45 years as a Machinist Laborer in Wisconsin followed by 10 more years at Wal-Mart in Superior, WI, Blue Earth, MN, and Fairmont, MN. He loved his family especially all of his grandchildren. Leonard cherished time spent gardening, fishing and hunting. Most of all, Leonard enjoyed working with the missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  Leonard married Dixie Richardson in 1955 and had six children. She passed away in 1990. Leonard later married Barbara Tilton on April 10, 1999, at the Chicago, Il, Temple, and became a compassionate and loving step-father to her five children. Leonard also had a warm spot in his heart for all of his canine companions. He will be truly missed by those that loved him and called him friend.  Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Barbara Hoyt of Ceylon, MN; five children, Sandra Betham (John) Los Banos, CA, Wayne Hoyt (Evelina) of Superior, WI; James Hoyt of Duluth, MN; Joseph Hoyt (Jauneen) of Superior, WI, and Sarra Torbenson (Tim) of St. Peter, MN; five step-children, Daniel Pockrus (Joy) of Pocono Summit, PA, Shaun Pockrus (Elvin) of Prairie Farm, WI; Kevin Pockrus (Billy) of Fairmont, MN, Casey Sampson (Laurie) of Ceylon, MN, Laura Sampson (Dean) of Burnsville, MN; thirty-four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lillie Olson, Stella Adolphson and husband, Rick, one brother, Marvin Hoyt and wife Ruth all of Northern Wisconsin; one sister-in-law, Kathleen Jones of St. Helens, OR; two brothers-in-law, Tom Tilton of New Jersey, and Tim Tilton of the Phillippines. In addition to his parents, Leonard is preceded in death by his first wife, Dixie; a son, Michael; a grandson, Nathaniel Tobenson; a brother, Wallace Hoyt; and a brother-in-law, Ken Olson.

 

 

LUCILLE R. CARRIGAN, 93, of Truman

Services for Lucille R. Carrigan, 93, of Truman, formerly of Fairmont, will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Tuesday, November 18, 2008, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairmont, with interment in Fairview Memorial Park. Lucille passed away on Friday evening, November 14, 2008, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont.  Visitation will be from Noon until the time of services on Tuesday at the church.  Lucille Ruth (Free) Carrigan was born on July 5, 1915, in Westbrook, MN, the daughter of William and Martha (Schultz) Free. She attended public schools and graduated from Lakefield High School in1933. Lucille spent her childhood in various cities including Westbrook, Vernon Center, Waterville, North Mankato, and Lakefield. After graduation, she was employed as a bookkeeper for Lakefield Farmers Lumber Company.  On May 22, 1938, Lucille was united in marriage to Victor Carrigan in Lakefield. The couple lived in Lakefield for a few years before moving to Fairmont. They shared 31 years of marriage until Victor passed away on April 30, 1970. Lucille worked for The Singer Company as a bookkeeper for 17 years until she retired in 1972. She continued to live in Fairmont until March, 1995, when she moved to the Lutheran Manor apartments in Truman. Most recently, Lucille resided at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center where she passed away on November 14, 2008, at the age of 93 years.  Lucille loved to watch and feed the birds outside her window. She liked to see Cardinals and Blue Jays. She was known to always have pets including cats and dogs.  Left to cherish her memory are her children, Kathleen Hantelman and her husband, Charles of Spirit Lake, IA, Curtis Carrigan and his wife, Val of Fairmont, Cherice Kuseske and her husband, Tom of Mora, MN, Corliss Bremer and her husband, Mel of Roseville, Kevin Carrigan of St. Paul, and Craig Carrigan and his wife, Marilyn of Northrop; Daughter-In-Law, Georgia Carrigan of Long Prairie, MN; 18 Grandchildren; 27 Great Grandchildren; Brothers-In-Law, Milburne Carrigan and his wife, Barb of Luverne, Melborne Carrigan and his wife, Alice of Maple Grove; and Sister-In-Law, Corinne Hohenstein of Lakefield; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  In addition to her parents, Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Carrigan; infant Daughter, Kim Marie Carrigan; Son, Kent Carrigan; infant Granddaughter, Karie Anne Hantelman; Brother, Dean Free; and several Brothers-In-Law and Sisters-In-Law.

 

 

VICKI M. THATE, 53, of Fairmont

Funeral services for Vicki M. Thate, 53, of Fairmont will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, November 15, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Visitation will be 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. There will also be a prayer service at 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Lakeview Funeral Home.   Vicki passed away Sunday evening, November 9, 2008 at her home near Fairmont.  Victoria Marie Berg was born on January 17, 1955 in Fairmont, the daughter of Richard J. and JoAnn (Kazebier) Berg. She grew up in Fairmont and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1973. She was united in marriage to Kevin Thate on October 26, 1974 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Over the years, Vicki has worked at Draper Foods, A-OK Service, State Bank of Fairmont and most recently worked with the handicapped at HSI. Vicki loved to be with family and friends.  She is survived by her husband, Kevin Thate of Fairmont; two sons, Andy Thate and his wife, Pheny, of Bahran, Josh Thate of Fairmont; granddaughter, Lucy Victoria Thate of Bahran; parents, Richard and JoAnn Berg of Fairmont; brother, Bob Berg and his wife, Randi, of Trimont; sisters, Teresa Berg of Fairmont; Kathy Klug and her husband, Glen, of Ceylon, Stacie Gerhart of Fairmont; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ken and Betty Thate of Fairmont; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rick Thate and his wife, Lisa, of Fairmont, Karen Green and her husband, Ron, of Fairmont, Sharon Thate and friend, Bruce Fields, of Atlanta, GA, Todd Thate and his wife, Kelly, of St. Louis Park, MN, Greg Thate and his wife, Tiffany, of Mankato; special friends, Pat and Bob Green Jr. of Fairmont; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many, many friends. ALFRED C. SCHMID, of Fairmont

Memorial service for Alfred C. Schmid, 88, of Fairmont will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, November 14, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Military honors will follow at the church by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin County V.F.W. Post 1222. Visitation with the family will be 4:30 - 7:00 P.M. Thursday, November 13, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to the service at the church. Alfred passed away Sunday afternoon, November 9, 2008 at his home in Fairmont.  Alfred Conrad Schmid was born on December 16, 1919 in Foxboro, WI, the son of Jacob and Martha (Meier) Schmid. He attended school in Foxboro throught the tenth grade then graduated from Superior Central High School. He went on to Superior State University before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941. During WW II he served overseas in Fiji and the Soloman Islands and later transferred into the Army - Air Corps. He was honorably discharged in 1945. Alfred moved to Fairmont in 1946 and owned and operated Schmid Heating and Air Conditioning with his brother, Bill. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Jorgenson on April 18, 1952 at Waverly Lutheran Church near Truman and they made their home in Fairmont. After twenty five years operating his business in Fairmont, Al and Dorothy purchased the Hardware Store in Truman. They operated "Schmid Hardware Store" from 1974 until retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Martin County V.F.W. Post 1222 and the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 in Fairmont.  Those that are left to honor and cherish his memory include, his wife, Dorothy Schmid of Fairmont; children, daughter-in-law, Sharon Schmid of Wayzata, MN; son, Michael Schmid and his wife, Kathleen, of Fairmont; daughter, Julie Grist and her husband, Warren, of Loretto, MN; daughter, Becky Johnson and her husband, Jared, of Kasson, MN; nine grandchildren, Erica and Sara Schmid, Jessica Reipke, Julian and Jackson Schmid, Meredith and Jacob Grist, Peyton and Parker Johnson; brother, Ernie Schmid and his wife, Vicki, of Hibbing, MN; sisters-in-law, Leola (Schmid) Brownlee of Fairmont, Lila (Schmid) Profit of Superior, WI, Lorraine Schmid of Superior, WI, Dorla Christensen of Blaine, MN, Patti Dalheimer and her husband, Bob, of Alexandria, MN, brother-in-law, Howard Jorgenson of Truman; dear friends, Mark and Teri Hanson and their sons; many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. FLORENCE I. MEYER, 96, of Fairmont

Services for Florence I. Meyer, 96, of Fairmont, will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, November 13, 2008, at United Methodist Church in Fairmont with interment in Fairview Memorial Park. Florence died on Sunday evening, November 9, 2008, at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. Visitation will be on Thursday from noon until the time of services at the church.  Florence was born on February 24, 1912, in Swea City, Iowa, the daughter of Roal and Annie (Fevold) Roalson. She attended Swea City public schools and graduated with the class of 1930. In 1936, she was united in marriage to Roy Meyer in Fairmont, MN. They shared 25 years of marriage until Roy passed away in 1961. After getting married, the couple moved to Fairmont, where Florence has resided since.  Florence was employed with many different companies through her life, including Stokleys, Armours, and Woolworths. Most recently she was self employed and did home cleaning for area families. During her free time, she enjoyed spending time in her garden and caring for her flowers. When she was younger, Florence liked to read, go for walks, and fishing with Roy.  When Florence needed assistance with her daily care, she became a resident at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in August of 2008. She passed away there surrounded by her family.  Left to cherish her memory are her children, Janice Larsen and her husband, Donald of Warner Springs, CA, Steven Meyer and his wife, Rebecca of Fairmont, and Nancy Roslansky and her husband, Bill of Fairmont; grandchildren, Jeff Larsen and his wife, Brenda of South Korea, Mark Larsen of Southern CA, Todd Larsen and his wife, Nancy of Southern CA, Andrea Cuene and her husband, Jim of Plymouth, Michael Rosolanka and his wife Bridget of Victoria, Bridget Meyer of Plymouth, and Tony Meyer of St. Paul; 9 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy Meyer in 1961; infant great granddaughter, Sophia Rosolanka; brothers, Elmer, Louie, Bert, and Marvin Roalson; Sister, Myrtle Peterson; and step-son, Bernie Meyer.

 

 

LUCILLE H. LAROW, 83, Fairmont, MN

Funeral services for Lucille H. LaRow, 83, of Fairmont, MN, will be Thursday, November 13, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Burial will be held in the Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont following the service. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 12, 2008, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Thursday. Lucille passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2008, at the Fairmont Medical Center in Fairmont.  Lucille Helen (Astrum) LaRow was born on December 6, 1924, in Wadena, MN, the daughter of Carl P. and Irene H. (Bengston) Astrum. Lucille attended school in Walker at the Walker High School and received her GED from Fairmont High School in the 1970's.  On May 15, 1944, Lucille was united in marriage to Armond LaRow in San Louis Obispo, CA. Together the couple made their home in Ah Gwah Ching, MN, before moving to Fairmont. The couple was blessed with seven children, Darla, Dawn, Lori, Michael, Daniel, Bradley, and Jeffrey.  Lucille loved caring for her family and took great pride in helping to provide for them. She worked as a waitress at Dave’s Home Plate for a number of years and also worked for many years at the Fairmont Community Hospital as a Nurses Aid and with Home Health Care. Lucille retired in 1995.  In her spare time, Lucille enjoyed playing cards and dice games. Family was very important to Lucille; and she cherished memories made during time spent with them. Lucille had a wonderful sense of humor and was extremely honest. Her kind, caring ways will be greatly missed. Lucille was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont and also helped with STEP Inc. as well as MRCI.  Left to cherish her memory is her children, Darla Shuler and husband, Travis of Homer, LA, Michael LaRow Sr. of Fairmont, MN, Dawn Larson of Fairmont, MN, Bradley LaRow and wife, Ruth of Swea City, IA, Jeffery LaRow and wife, Karen of Burnsville, MN, Daniel LaRow of Fairmont, MN; twenty-three grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; one brother Dale Astrum and wife Dorothy of Virginia Beach, VA; five sisters, Karen Gruber of Fairmont, MN; Gladys Vredenburg of Akeley, MN; Dorothy Forrest of Hackensack, MN; Ruth Dickey of Pequeot Lakes, MN; and Anna Marie Landsteiner and husband Vince of Fairmont, MN; one sister-in-law, Beverly Astrum of Ramsey, MN; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. In addition to her parents, Lucille is preceded in death by her husband, Armond LaRow in 1995; a daughter, Lori LaRow; one sister, Alice Jean Astrum; and two brothers, Carl John Astrum. and Richard Astrum.

 

 

HENRY A. BOEHME, 62, Fairmont, MN

Memorial services for Henry A. Boehme, 62, of Fairmont, MN, will be Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of service beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home. Henry passed away on Thursday, November 6, 2008, at the Immanuel St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato after a four year battle with cancer. Henry August Boehme was born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1946, in Willmar, MN, the son of Vincent and Catherine (Skinner) Boehme. He attended the Catholic Parochial School in Bird Island and completed his education in the Bird Island Public School. Following his education, Henry worked construction for many years in the Bird Island area. He married Hazel Slattum and the couple was blessed with five sons, David, Bob, Chuck, Raymond, and Paul. On October 16, 1994, Henry was united in marriage to Linda Kronlokken Haugen in Marshall, MN. Together the couple made their home in the Marshall area before moving to Fairmont in 1996. While in Fairmont, Henry worked for Cloverleaf Cold Storage and Guenther’s. In his spare time, Henry enjoyed hunting and fishing. He treasured memories made in his youth attending elk hunting trips out west. Henry was a past member of the Knights of Columbus and was also a Boy Scout Troop Leader. He will be missed by those that loved him and called him friend. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Linda Boehme of Fairmont, MN; children, David Boehme of Spicer, MN; Bob Boehme and wife, Julie of Kandihoyi, MN; Chuck Boehme of Hector, MN; Raymond Boehme and wife, Jill of Fargo, ND; and Paul Boehme and wife Peggy of Olivia, MN; step-children, Lisa Erbes and husband, Wayne of Marshall, MN; Richard Haugen of Sacred Heart, MN; and Sarah Haugen of Granite Falls, MN; seven grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; one step-great granddaughter; four brothers, Fr. LORRAINE M. BAUMAN, 78, of Fairmont

Funeral services for Lorraine M. Bauman, 78, of Fairmont, MN, will be Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fairmont. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be Monday, November 10, 2008, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Lorraine passed away on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont.  Lorraine M. (Steppel) Bauman was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1929, in St. Peter, MN, the daughter of Norbert and Adrienne (Maes) Steppel. She attended school in St. Peter and graduated from St. Peter High School in 1947. Lorraine then attended Mankato State Teachers College.  On May 14, 1949, Lorraine was united in marriage to Donald Bauman. Together the couple made their home in Fairmont where they were blessed with three children, Gail, Todd, and Thomas.  Lorraine was very active in helping her husband, Don with his insurance and stock brokerage business. In 1980, Lorraine and Don started the Fairmont Chapter of The Compassionate Friends for Bereaved Parents, Grandparents, and Siblings, a project that they both continued to be very active in. Lorraine was extremely involved with Compassionate Friends on the National Level as well by being a member of the board serving on the Finance Committee. Lorraine also served on the Maplewood Board at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Services. She was Golf Chairperson at the Interlaken Golf Course and was an active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ helping by being a Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent, and serving on the Christian Education Board.  Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Donald of Fairmont, MN; daughter, Gail Bauman of Yankton, SD; son, Todd Bauman and wife Bev of Nachodasis, LA; granddaughter, Kate Judd and husband, Willie of San Diego, CA; grandson, William of Jamestown, ND; one brother, Richard Steppel and wife Judy of Dayton, OH; one brother-in-law, Kenneth Bauman and wife, Elaine of Byron, MN; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. In addition to her parents, Lorraine is preceded in death by one son, Thomas Jason Bauman.  The family prefers memorials be given to the Fairmont Chapter of the Compassionate Friends, Lakeview Health Care Center, First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fairmont, and Lakeview Hospice Services. A special thanks to Dr. Braaten and his staff for all of their support and guidance during Lorraine’s illness.

 

 

MARCELL (MARCY) L. FRAKER, 85, of Fairmont

A celebration of Life Service for Marcell "Marcy" L. Fraker will be 10:30 A.M, Monday, November 10, at the St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. Visitation will be 2:00 to 5:00 P.M., Sunday, November 9, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. There will be a Prayer Service at 5:00 P.M., Sunday at the Lakeview Funeral Home.  Marcy passed away Thursday morning, November 6, 2008 at the Fairmont Medical Center.  Marcell Lorraine (Pytleski) Fraker, daughter of Peter and Priscilla (Petrowiak) Pytleski was born on July 18, 1923 on a farm near East Chain. She attended District 6 country school. After her schooling, she worked as a waitress in Fairmont until her marriage to Harry L. Fraker on October 29, 1946 at Holy Family Catholic Church in East Chain and they made their home in Fairmont on West 11th Street on George Lake. Marcy worked as a cook for the Fairmont School District from 1982 - 1998. Harry passed away on July 11, 1993. Marcy was active at St. John Vianney Catholic Church and Timothy’s Circle since 1947. She was also a member and past president of the Martin County V.F.W. Post 1222 Ladies Auxiliary.  She is survived by three children, Sandy (Fraker) Clow and special friend Chuck Juergens of Fairmont, Patricia Stillmunkes and her husband, Gary, of Westminster, CO, Harry Fraker Jr. of Algona, IA; four grandchildren, Jeremy Fraker and Christopher Fraker of Bancroft, IA, Sage and Alicia Stillmunkes of Columbus, OH; six grandchildren, Jason Fraker, Madison Fraker, Rylan Stillmunkes, Shelby Fraker, Morgan Fraker and Jacob Stillmunkes-Hague; four sisters, Lucille Findley of Huntley, Dorothy Wenzel of Fairmont, Esther Wenzel of Truman, Marion Anderson and her husband, Lyle, of Ceylon; sister-in-law, Florence Pytleski of Fairmont; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, husband and Harry’s mother, Marcy was also preceded in death by her grandson, Jason Clow and brother, Roman Pytleski.

 

 

SHERRY A. RIFFLE, 47, of Fairmont

A Memorial Service for Sherry A. Riffle, 47, of Fairmont, MN, will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Sherry died on Sunday afternoon, November 2, 2008, at her home in Fairmont. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the Lakeview Funeral Home.  Sherry Ann Riffle was born on August 20, 1961, in San Diego, CA, the daughter of Lawrence and Darlene (Altenburg) Thomas. She spent her childhood in Fairmont and attended Fairmont public schools. When Sherry was younger, she traveled and lived in various locations around the United States before moving back to town in 2001. Sherry was an avid Vikings Football fan.  She worked at the Holiday Inn in Fairmont and most recently in the House Keeping Department at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. Sherry loved spending time with her nieces and nephews as well as her 4 dogs which she cherished.  Sherry is survived by her siblings, Deb Geiger and her husband, Roger of Welcome, Jeff Thomas and his wife, Theresa of Fairmont, Barbara Christensen and her husband, Ben of Fairmont; Many nieces, nephews; Special friend, Kevin Nelson of Fairmont; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Darlene Thomas.

 

 

NEIL J. MCDONALD, 98, of Fairmont

Neil John McDonald 98, passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2008 at the Fairmont Medical Center. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at 4:00 pm at The First Congregational, United Church of Christ in Fairmont. The Lakeview Funeral Home of Fairmont is handling the arrangements.  Neil McDonald was born October 27, 1910 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Donald Murdock and Lulu Dell (Neihardt) McDonald. He graduated from Central High School in Minneapolis and received a degree in engineering from University of Minnesota in 1932.  On August 29, 1936 Neil was united in marriage with Villa May Enblom at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. The couple moved to Fairmont, Minnesota in 1937. They had three children, Martha, Ann, and Bruce. While the children were growing up Neil was active in PTA, Girl Scouts, and Boy Scouts.  Neil was employed by Fairmont Railroad Motors where he began work as a Design Engineer and by his retirement he was Chief Engineer. He was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers for more than 70 years. Neil always enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying fishing, hunting, and sailing. He took pleasure in woodworking and photography. His community activities included the Concert Society, American Field Service, Kiwanis, SCORE, CER, Salvation Army, and The First Congregational, United Church of Christ.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his brother Donald. Left to cherish him are his children: Martha and Hollis McBride of Brunswick, Maine, Ann and Gerald Nelson of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bruce and Corrine McDonald of Shakopee, Minnesota, seven grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. He will also be remembered by brother-in-law John Enblom of Red Wing, Minnesota, sister-in-law Charlotte Enblom of Edina Prairie, Minnesota, many nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family, including exchange student Jean Francois Talec of Orleans, France.  Memorial gifts may be given to The First Congregational, United Church of Christ in Fairmont, The Salvation Army, or the charity of your choice.

 

 

SUE R. ABEL, 68, of Fairmont

Memorial services for Sue Abel, 68, of Fairmont, MN, will be Tuesday, November 4, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Fairmont following the service. Visitation will be Monday, November 3, 2008, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service held at 7:00 p.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Sue passed away on Thursday, October 30, 2008, at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN.  Sue Rae (Cox) Abel was born on April 8, 1940, on the family farm near Elkton, MN, the daughter of Roy and Viola (Streit) Cox. She attended school at the St. John Vianney Parochial School and then attended high school in Fairmont.  On May 28, 1957, Sue was united in marriage to Norman Abel at the St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Together the couple made their home in Welcome, MN, and later Fairmont, MN, where they were blessed with five children, Doug, Terri, Cindy, Charlie, and David.  Sue was a very active person and truly treasured the outdoors. Some of her most cherished memories were made traveling with family and friends in her and Norman’s motor home and attending the annual family fishing trip. One special trip for Sue was the trip to Germany with Norman and her son, David. The Holiday’s also held a special place in Sue’s heart and she especially enjoyed watching the excitement on the faces of her children and grandchildren while opening gifts during Christmas. Sue was a very active member in the St. John Vianney Catholic Church until her health prevented her from attending. NANCY L. TONNE, 67, of Fairmont

Services for Nancy L. Tonne, 67, of Fairmont will be at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at Calvary Baptist Church in Granada with interment in Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. Nancy died on Saturday evening at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont.  Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.  Nancy Lee Tonne (Theobald) was born on March 23, 1941, the daughter of Elmer and Grace (King) Theobald. She received her education in the Fairmont public schools. She was a lifelong resident of Fairmont. Nancy worked at various places including, Telex in Blue Earth, Aerospace in Fairmont, and at the Fairmont Salvation Army Thrift Store.  Nancy enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing BINGO, watching the gameshow network, and driving around to see the fall colors. She attended Calvary Baptist Church in Granada.  Nancy is survived by 2 sons, Dennis Tonne and his wife, Lisa of Fairmont, Dale Tonne and his wife, Amy of Fairmont; Siblings, Jerry Theobald of Fairmont, Diane Olson and her husband, Butch of Fairmont, and Michael Theobald and his wife, Darcy of Good Thunder; Grandchildren, James, Luke, Amber, Anna, and Eli Tonne; aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Grace.

 

 

WILMA R. HARRIS, 94, of Fairmont

Memorial services for Wilma R. Harris, 94, of Fairmont, will be 10:30 A.M, Saturday, October 25, 2008, at First Congregational United Church Of Christ in Fairmont with a private family burial at a later time. Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of service beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the church on Saturday, October 25, 2008. Wilma passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2008, at the Fairmont Medical Center.  Wilma Rose (Engelking) Harris was born on April 17, 1914, in LuVerne, MN, the daughter of William H. and Mary (Ohlendorf) Engelking. She attended school in LuVerne and graduated from LuVerne High School in 1933. On August 31, 1963, she was united in marriage to Fay Harris in Fairmont, MN.  Wilma was employed by Tri State Insurance Company in LuVerne, and the State Employment Service in Worthington before transferring to Fairmont in 1939. She continued to work as an employment interviewer for the Work Force Center, formerly Employer Services, until her retirement in 1976. She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fairmont as well as having lifetime membership with the Hospital Auxiliary. In her spare time, Wilma enjoyed crewelwork, knitting, and painting. She cherished memories made traveling throughout the years with family and friends, especially her trips over seas. Wilma loved taking time to enjoy the simple things in life, making sure to always "stop and smell the roses". She was an avid golfer and continued to do so until her health prevented her from doing so. Left to cherish her memory are her step children, Boyd Harris and his wife, Geneva of Truman, MN; Dennis Harris and his wife, Linda of Cleveland, OH; Larry Harris and his wife, Carol of Hampton, VA; Ramona Dietz of Fairmont, MN; Ivaline Sellers and her husband, Gary of Mapleton, MN; Bonnie Ask and her husband, John of St. Paul; 14 step grandchildren, 22 step great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. In addition to her parents, Wilma is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fay, and four sisters, Lillian Leistico, Clara Fiene, Ruth Salmonsky, and Erma Schmidt.

 

 

VERNA F. TIETJE, 86 of Ceylon

Services for Verna F. Tietje, 86, of Ceylon will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 23, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Ceylon with Rev. Russell Reimers officiating. Burial will follow at Lake Belt Township Cemetery.  Verna passed away Monday morning, October 20, 2008 at the Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 22, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.  Verna Frieda Bremer was born on May 8, 1922 in Tenhassen Township, Martin County, the daughter of Richard and Alma (Brockmann) Bremer. She graduated from St. Paul’s Parochial School in Wilbert. She was united in marriage to Herman Tietje on April 12, 1942 and they lived in six different states west of the Mississippi during Herman’s military service. After Herman’s discharge, they farmed in Lake Belt Township for many years. Herman passed away on December 10, 1985 and Verna continued to live on the farm. Verna was active in various organizations including Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and the State Liner’s Club.  She is survived by three children, Connie Hendrickson and her husband, Jerry, of Forest Lake, MN, Jerry Tietje and his wife, Paula, of Fairmont, Larry Tietje and his wife, Julie, of Wyoming, MN; daughter-in-law, Deb Tietje of Armstrong, IA; thirteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one sister, Hilda Fenrich and her husband, Verner, of Grove City, MN; sisters-in-law, Lyla Bremer of Fairmont and Hilda Tietje of LA; brother-in-law, Roland Tietje and his wife, Verna of Ceylon, MN; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Verna was also preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Tietje, grandson, Alex, two brothers, Clarence and Ernie Bremer; two sisters, Zelda Bremer and Ruth Heinrich, brothers-in-law, Ervin Fritz and Erhardt Tietje, sisters-in-law, Edna Bremer and Esther Fritz.  Memorials are preferred to the KSUM Lutheran Hour Radio Program.

Donna passed away on Sunday, October 19, 2008, at the Goldfinch Estates in Fairmont.  Donna E. (Murray) Domek was born on December 23, 1921, in Rolling Green Township, Martin County, MN, to parents, Donavon and Gladys (Bump) Murray. She attended District #42 in Rolling Green Township and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1940. Following her graduation, Donna worked for Brads Café.  On January 13, 1942, Donna was united in marriage to Wayne Domek at the Martin County Courthouse in Fairmont. Together the couple made their home in Fairmont where they were blessed with three daughters, Kay, Linda, and Wendy.  Donna enjoyed being a stay at home mother for her daughters. After they began their education, Donna began working for Stokley Van Camp/Armours Food where she was employed as a quality controller for 27 years retiring in 1984.  Donna cherished spending time with family and friends and will be missed by those that loved her and called her friend. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and enjoyed being active in the church.  Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Kay Fahey and husband, William of Northfield, MN; Linda Selbrade of Waterville, MN; and Wendy Blom and husband Leroy of Fairmont, MN; ten grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; two brothers, Gerald Murray and wife Marilyn of Bozeman, MT; and John Murray and wife, Isa of Middleborough, MA; one sister, Sandra Tenny and Husband Darrel of Mira Loma, CA; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. TENA P. BIXBY, 90, of Fairmont

Visitation will be Monday, October 20, 2008, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Tena passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2008, at the Fairmont Medical Center in Fairmont.  Tena Patricia (Vogt) Bixby was born on September 3, 1918, in Rock Rapids, IA, the daughter of George and Angelina (Donker) Vogt. As a small child, Tena moved with her family to Adrian, MN, where she attended school and graduated from Adrian High School in 1936.  In 1944, Tena was united in marriage to Lloyd Bixby at the United Methodist Church in Fairmont, MN. Together the couple made their home on a farm south of Fairmont and were blessed with two daughters, Lois and Jean.  Tena treasured life on the farm and enjoyed helping her husband when ever needed. She also cherished being able to be a stay at home mother spending time with her daughters. Tena was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fairmont. In her spare time, Tena enjoyed reading and painting. She was involved in Card Club and frequently hosted the group through out the years. After Lloyds passing, Tena purchased a motor home and traveled the country with the Good Sam Camping Group. She enjoyed spending time outdoors, golfing and tending to her garden. Tena will be deeply missed by those that loved her and called her friend.  Left to cherish her memory are her sons-in-law, Jim Cox of Fairmont, MN, and Andy Johnson of Texas; four grandchildren, Heidi Cox of Fairmont, MN, Vicki Cox of Fairmont, MN, John Cox of Fairmont, MN, and Andrea Johnson of Texas; four great grandchildren, Chris Andrews, Emma Scheppmann, Ellie Cox, and Ethan Darnell; as well as many extended family and friends. HAROLD L. SWIFT, 80, of Northrop

Services for Harold L. Swift, 80, of Northrop, MN will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, October 13, at St. James Lutheran Church in Northrop with Rev. Robert Trueblood officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery by the Schwieger-Kahler American Legion Post 522 and the Martin County V.F.W. Post 1222. Visitation will be 4:00 - 7:00 P.M. Sunday, October 12, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Harold passed away Thursday, October 9, 2008 at the Fairmont Medical Center. Harold Lloyd Swift was born on July 3, 1928 in Dunnell, MN, the son of Alvin and Amanda (Hagen) Swift. He graduated from Fairmont High School in 1946. After his graduation he entered the U.S. Navy in June of 1946 and served until his honorable discharge in April of 1948. He married Joan Schwieger on June 21, 1952 and were later divorced. Harold lived in Omaha, NE then entered the U.S. Air Force in February of 1951 and served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in February of 1955. After his discharge from the Air Force Harold lived in Benicia, CA, where he started his career for the U.S. Postal Service. He transferred to the Fairmont Postal Office in 1966. He was united in marriage to Janice Martinson on April 4, 1970 and they made their home in Northrop. Janice passed away in 1977. Harold retired from the Postal service in March of 1987. Harold was very active in the community and some of his involvements included: St. James Lutheran Church, Schwieger-American Legion Post 522, Martin County V.F.W. Post 1222, mayor of Northrop from 1977 to 2006. His passion was coaching baseball for Little League, Martin Lutheran High School and the Legion team from Northrop. He loved to watch the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins. When he wasn’t coaching baseball, one of his favorite places to be was Lost Island Lake in Iowa where he did a lot of bird watching and fishing. He is survived by one daughter, Renee Larson of Waukee, IA; three granddaughters, Theresa Reiser and her husband, Ryan, and their children, Ryan, Jacob, Olivia and Vera, of Sheldon, IA, Tranna Wrightsman and her husband, Andrew, and their children, Brady and Caitlin, of Waukee, IA, Tera Mendoza and her husband, Carlos, and their children, Mateo and Cecilia, of Barstow, CA; brother, Dave Swift and his wife, Mary Jane, of California, MD; three sisters, Joyce Barber of Kenosha, WI, Cheryl Crossan and her husband, Chris, of Galva, IL, Carol Schultze and her husband, Warren, of Northrop; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Harold was also preceded in death by one son, Christopher Lee Swift, brother, Donald Swift, and sister, Evelyn Neuenfeldt Harold’s family would like to thank all of Harold’s friends and family who were there for him giving their support and kindness.

 

 

JEROME V. "JERRY" THIESSE, 59, of Fairmont

Memorial Services for Jerry Thiesse, 59, of Fairmont, MN, will be held Saturday, October 11, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery following the service with military honors performed by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post #36 and the Martin County VFW Post # 1222 of Fairmont. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the time of service beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home. Jerry passed away on Monday, September 29, 2008, at his home in Fairmont.   Jerome "Jerry" Velmer Thiesse was born on December 4, 1948, in Fairmont, MN, the son of Velmer and Shirley (Willard) Thiesse. As an infant, he was baptized at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wilbert, MN. Jerry attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Parochial School in Fairmont and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1966. Just a few days following his graduation, Jerry enlisted in U.S. Air Force. Jerry was stationed in Rapid City, SD; and served tours of duty in Guam and Vietnam. On December 15, 1972, Jerry received his honorable discharge.  Following his discharge, Jerry lived in Nebraska, Arkansas, and Texas before returning to Minnesota in the 80's. He loved to travel and took great pleasure in being able to see the country side while trucking before an accident prohibited him from continuing to do so.   In his spare time, Jerry enjoyed reading, playing cards, and working on crossword puzzles. In his younger years, he was an avid outdoors man, treasuring memories made hunting and fishing. Jerry especially cherished time spent with family and friends, visiting or watching the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry was a member of the Martin County VFW Post#1222 and the American Legion of Northrop. He was also a member of the Grace Lutheran Church.  Left to cherish his memory are his children, David Vaughn of Casper, WY; Michelle Ugland of Spearfish, SD; Jerome Thiesse Jr of Arkansas; brothers, Dan Thiesse and wife Nancy of Fairmont; Tom Thiesse and wife Debra of Aurora, CO; and Todd Thiesse and wife Cathy of Fairmont, MN; a special friend, Sharon Diekmann; nine nieces and nephews; five grandsons and two granddaughters; many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and friends. MAXINE I. WHITMAN, 74, of Granada, MN

Services for Maxine I. Whitman, 74, of East Chain, MN will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, October 4, at the United Methodist Church in East Chain. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery near East Chain.  Maxine passed away Wednesday morning, October 1, 2008 in the Fairmont Medical Center. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Friday, October 3, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to the service at the church.  Maxine Irene Schock was born on April 25, 1934 in Pilot Grove Township, the daughter of Theodore "Ted" and Cora (Garrison) Schock. She attended District 72 Country School in Faribault County and then graduated from Fairmont High School. She was united in marriage to Lawrence G. Whitman at the East Chain Methodist Church on April 21, 1952. After their marriage, Maxine worked one year at the Fairmont Telephone Company and then farmed together with Lawrence. They farmed together for fifty six years in East Chain Township until retiring in 2006. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in East Chain where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and was active in the U.M.W. She was also a Cub Scout Leader and involved with P.T.A.   Those that are left to cherish her memory include her husband, Lawrence Whitman of East Chain; one daughter, Rhonda Rudolph and her husband, Don, of Trimont; two sons, Roger Whitman and his wife, Sue, of East Chain, Bruce Whitman and his wife, Tami, of Truman; eight grandchildren, Nathan Rudolph and his wife, Gina, Christa Rudolph and her fiancé, Nicholas, Guy Rudolph, Neil Whitman and his wife, Becky, Laura Koch and her husband, Zach, Cassie Becker and her husband, Ben, Megan Goraczkowski and her husband, J.D., and Lindsey Whitman; six great grandchildren, Mason, Isabella, Michael, Macey, Cohl and Jackson; three brothers, Robert Schock and his wife, May, Lyle Schock, Delos Schock and his wife, Marge; brothers-in-law, Marlow Whitman, Donald Whitman and his wife, Linda, sister-in-law, Bernice Whitman, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.  In addition to her parents and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Maxine was also preceded in death by her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Archie and Leona Whitman, Florence and Ed Rowley, Jesse and Dorothy Whitman, Dorothy F. JACQUELINE R. "JACKIE" THIESSE, 47, of Fairmont

Funeral service for Jacqueline R. "Jackie" Thiesse, 47, of Fairmont will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, October 3, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont with Rev. Robert Roettger officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont.  Jackie passed away Tuesday morning, September 30, 2008 at her home near East Chain after a courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, October 2, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.  Jacqueline Rebecca Malo was born on July 12, 1961 in Fairmont, MN, the daughter of Mervin and Barb (Barvels) Malo. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Jackie attended school in East Chain where she participated in many school events and was very active in 4H and cattle shows. Some of her accomplishments include: MN Guernsey Queen, Martin County Dairy Princess and crowned National Miss Sunshine. She graduated from East Chain High School in 1979. She went on to the University of Minnesota - Crookston where she played volleyball and softball for two years and was Ag-Arama Queen in 1981. Jackie then attended South Dakota State University and the McConnell Travel School.  After her schooling she worked at the Embassy Suites in Minneapolis. On June 16, 1984 she married Terry Stensland at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairmont. They lived in Huntley and Jackie worked at the Huntley State Bank and then moved to the farm in rural Fairmont and Jackie worked at Weigh Tronix. In 1995 she went back to school at Mankato State and received a degree in Sociology.  She was united in marriage to Greg Thiesse on July 17, 1999. After that, Jackie worked with the Minnesota Valley Action Council, manager of the Goldfinch Estates and was employed at FOSM. The last couple of years, Jackie enjoyed working at MRCI.  Jackie loved to ski, read, golf with friends, cross-stitch, scrap booking, and cherished time with friends and family.  Those that will cherish Jackie’s memory include her husband, Greg Thiesse of rural Fairmont; daughter, Jessica Stensland of rural Fairmont; step daughters, Jamie Thiesse of Mankato, Amber Leek and her husband, Chris, of Bells, TN; parents, Mervin and Barb Malo of rural Fairmont; brother, Todd Malo and special friend, Kari Dorholt, of Kalispell, MT; grandmother, Marjorie Barvels of Fergus Falls, MN; the Thiesse brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.   Jackie was preceded in death by her son, Tyler Stensland on October 31, 1993; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roland and Betty Thiesse; grandparents, several aunts, uncles and cousins.

 

 

CECELIA C. GREEN, 66, of Fairmont

Services for Cecelia C. Green, 66, of Fairmont, will be 11:00 A.M. on Friday, October 3, 2008, at the Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel in Fairmont. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Fairmont.  Cecelia died on Tuesday morning, September 30, 2008, at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN.  Cecelia Caroline Green was born May 7, 1942, in Philadelphia, PA, daughter of Stanley and Elizabeth (Webber) White.  Survivors include: sons, Gerald Green and his wife, Sheri of Benton, AR, Greg Green of Fairmont; daughter, Gloria M. Lindsey of Benton, AR; grandchildren, Jessica Green, Madison Green, Brianna Lindsey, and Vaughn Lindsey; sisters, Blanche, Barbara, Karen, and Flossie. She is preceded in death by her parents, and 3 sisters.

 

 

LUCILLE HELVIG, 106, of Fairmont

Services for Lucille Helvig, 106, of Fairmont, MN, will be 10:00 A.M. on Monday, September 29, 2008, at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center Chapel. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.  Lucille died on Thursday morning, September 25, 2008, at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont.  Lucille Helvig was born in St. James, MN, on March 26, 1902, the daughter of Knudt and Louisa (Mau) Helvig. She and her family lived in St. James, MN, for a short time then moved to Ormsby, MN, before returning to the Helvig family farm in Waverly Township, Martin County. She received her elementary education at District 3, a one-room country school in Waverly Township. After high school she attended Carleton College where she received a degree in speech in 1924. She taught school in the Philippine Islands for several years. When Lucille returned to the United States from the Philippines, she became an officer in the Daughters of the Eastern Star. She finished her teaching degree in Springfield, MN, and worked as a librarian there. After retirement she returned to the Helvig home on Linden Drive in Fairmont. She lived there until 2001, at the age of 99, when she then moved to the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont.  Ms. Helvig was a member of the Lutheran Church. Lucille, along with her father and her uncle, John Helvig, was a charter member of the Waverly Lutheran Church. When she moved to Fairmont, she joined Grace Lutheran Church. Having lived for more than a century, having lived in the Far East, and having traveled around the world, Lucille had many memories and loved to reminisce about the experiences in her life.  Lucille is survived by her nephews, niece, and their families, Bruce Helvig and his wife, Evelyn of Fairmont, Robert Helvig and his wife, Esther of Grand Rapids, MN, Donald Dodge of Fairmont, and Maxine Wade of Edina. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, John C. Helvig, Agnes Dodge, and Mildred Galpin.

 

 

LaVera V. Koehler, 87, of Fairmont

Services for LaVera V. (ZumBerge) Koehler, 87, of Fairmont will be 12:00 Noon, Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Burial will follow at Fairview Memorial Park.  LaVera passed away Tuesday morning, September 23, 2008 at the Lakeview Methodist Healthcare Center in Fairmont. Visitation will be 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service on Saturday at the church. Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is handling the arrangements for the family.  LaVera Viola ZumBerge was born on January 23, 1921, in Bongards, Carver County, Minnesota, the daughter of Arthur and Gertrude (Litzau) ZumBerge. She attended Glencoe, MN public schools and was a graduate of the Glencoe High School class of 1940. On August 23, 1952, LaVera was united in marriage to Herbert G. Koehler at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Glencoe, MN in Helen Township, McLeod County, MN. Herbert and LaVera lived in Illinois and Massachusetts before returning to Minnesota and residing in Fairmont. LaVera was employed as a Banking Customer Service Representative.   She is survived by her husband, Herb Koehler of Fairmont, MN; Sisters, Clarice Henning of Belle Plaine, and Adeline Harms Klancke and her husband, Lowell of Hamburg, MN; Sisters-In-Law, Rosemary Sorenson of Fairmont, and Ruth Rockett and her husband, Sam of Lyon, GA; Brothers-In-Law, Mark Koehler of Arizona, and David Koehler and his wife, Delia of St. Paul; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Gertrude ZumBerge and Brother, Gilbert ZumBerge.

 

 

WESLEY O. BAKKEN, 69, of Granada, MN

Services for Wes Bakken, 69, of Granada, MN will be 11:00 A. M Tuesday, September 23, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Burial will be Wednesday, September 24, at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.  Wes passed away Friday afternoon, September 19, 2008 at his home in Granada after a courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be 4:00 - 7:00 P.M. Monday, September 22 and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont.  Wesley Oliver Bakken was born on January 17, 1939 in Fairmont, MN, the son of Oliver and Martha (West) Bakken. He grew up in the Sherburn and Granada area, where he attended school. He entered the U.S. Navy in December of 1957 and served on the USS Lewis overseas as a torpedo man. He was honorably discharged in December of 1959 and returned to Martin County. On September 2, 1961, he was united in marriage to Carol Berhow at Ft. Belmont Park in Jackson, MN. They made their home in the twin cities where Wes worked at a foundry. In 1969, they moved to Granada and Wes worked at Fairmont Railway Motors in the foundry. In 1974, they moved to Trimont and Wes worked at the Mogenson Seed Farm. They moved back to Granada in 1985 and Wes worked at Harsco Track Technologies in the Experimental and Test Division. He retired in 2000. He was a member of the Granada American Legion and loved to fish.  Those that will cherish his memory include his wife, Carol Bakken of Granada; three sons, Steven Bakken of Ormsby, MN, Mark Bakken and his wife, Patty, of Ormsby, MN, Len Bakken and his wife, Lori, of Fulda, MN; three grandchildren, Randy Bakken of St. James, Amanda Bakken of Ormsby, and Taliah Bakken of Sherburn; five step grandchildren, Jacki, Adam, Tim, Alex and Clarke Hein; five sisters, Darlene Finch and her husband, Robert, of Northfield, MN, Marion Howard and her husband, Ronald, of Muskego, WI, Phyliss Meyer and her husband, Glenn, of Cornell, IL, Margaret Walters and her husband, Gordon, of Montgomery, MN, Nanette Cable and her husband, Gary, of Eagan, MN; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law in the Berhow family; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Wes was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Martha Bakken, sister and brother-in-law, Evangeline and Lester Faber.
