Funeral services for Betty A. Altman, 75, of Sherburn, MN, will be Monday, August 2, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Fairmont. Burial will be held following the service in the Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. Visitation will be Sunday, August 1, 2010, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and will continue one hour prior to the time of service beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church on Monday. Betty passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2010, at the Fairmont Medical Center in Fairmont, MN. The Lakeview Funeral Home of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.  Betty Ann (Meinders) Altman was born on March 22, 1935, on a farm near Rushmore, MN, the daughter of Marvin and Anne (Elsing) Meinders. As a young girl, Betty attended Country School and later graduated from Adrian High School in Adrian, MN. Following her high school graduation, Betty enrolled in Business College in Mankato where she attended for one year.  On February 20, 1955, Betty was united in marriage to Joseph Altman at the East Freisland Church in rural Rushmore, MN. Together the couple made their home in Jackson, Fairmont and on a farm near Sherburn where they were blessed with four children, Barry, Randy, Lois, and Lynn.  Betty worked various places throughout her career. She worked as a Supervisor for over ten years for Sperry Univac until her retirement in 1997. In her spare time, Betty enjoyed working on cross stitch and attending local garage sales. She treasured memories made throughout the years traveling to Jackpot Junction with family and friends and cherished time spent with her children and grandchildren. Betty’s love of life and sense of humor will be greatly missed by those that loved her and called her friend.  Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Joseph Altman of Sherburn, MN; children, Barry Altman of Fairmont, MN, Randy Altman and his wife, Marge of Little Egg Harbor, NJ, Lois Howard of Huntley, MN, and Lynn Altman of Ceylon, MN; four grandchildren, Abby Altman, Rachel Altman, Tylor Howard, and Calvin Howard and his wife, Jennifer; one brother, Raymond Meinders and his wife, Joy of Sioux Falls, SD; one sister, Marlene Kalsch and her husband, Lee of Manahawkin, NJ; one sister-in-law, Annabelle Diekman of Revere, MN; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends. In addition to her parents, Betty is preceded in death by one son-in-law and several brother-in-law and sister-in-law.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Sonja M. Gilbertson, 69, of Fairmont, MN, will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Thursday, July 29, 2010, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont with inurnment in Calvary Cemetery in Fairmont. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Sonja passed away on Sunday, July 25, 2010, at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements. Sonja Marie (Trembley) Gilbertson, daughter of Bertram “Berchy” and Dorothy (Stoltenberg) Trembley was born November 27, 1940 in Fairmont, MN. She attended Fairmont schools and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1958. Sonja then attended DeLyle’s Academy of Beauty and graduated in 1959, and worked as a beautician for one year. She married W.A. Kakeldey in 1960 to which was born one son, Troy. Sonja owned and operated the Jolly Inn in Fairmont for 42 years. In 1979, Sonja married Gerald “Gib” Gilbertson. Survivors include son, Troy Kakeldey; four grandchildren, Bethany Kakeldey, Tanner Kakeldey, Ryan Harmon, and Josh Kastning; one great grandchild, Taylor Kastning; daughter-in-law, Connie Kakeldey; one nephew, Todd Trembley; aunts, uncles, cousins, and fiancee Robert Strom. In addition to her parents, Sonja was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; and brother, Roger.

Kenneth W. Good

Services for Kenneth W. Good, 98, of Rochester, formerly of Fairmont, will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, July 26, 2010, at the Lakeview Funeral Home Funeral Chapel in Fairmont.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  Internment at Adrian, MN, will take place at a later date.  Ken passed away on Thursday morning, July 22, 2010, at Samaritan Bethany Heights in Rochester, MN.  Kenneth Willard Good, son of Arthur E. and Clara (Wahl) Good, was born on March 5, 1912, in Summit Township near Reading, MN.  He grew up on farms in the Reading area.  On October 5, 1934, Ken was united in marriage to Olga V. Breuer in Sioux Falls, SD.  They lived in Reading, MN, where Ken worked as an automobile mechanic.  In the summer of 1936, they moved to Norwood, MN.  In 1940, the couple moved to Fairmont, MN, where Ken was an automobile mechanic and machinist.  After retiring, Ken worked part-time at the Rose Lake Golf Course for 12 years in maintenance and grounds keeping.  In 2004, Ken and Olga relocated to Rochester, MN, to be closer to relatives.  The couple shared 75 years together.  Ken was a member of the Fairmont United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed vacationing in the Alexandria, MN, area as well as fishing, caring for his home, watching T.V. and repairing mechanical things.  Ken especially enjoyed visiting with friends.  Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Olga Good of Rochester, MN; daughter, Elaine (Ken) Bauman of Rochester; grandsons, Taylor (Susan) Bauman of Rochester, Lincoln Bauman of Rochester, and Grant (LeAnn) Bauman of Oronoco, MN; great grandchildren, Christopher (Katherine) Bauman of Rochester, Nicolle, Bryton, and Riley Bauman of Rochester, Haley and Abigail Bauman of Oronoco; brother Elden Good of Worthington; nieces, Janet Good of St. Paul, and Glenda (Roger) Lais of Bigelow, MN; great nephew, Dustin (Tiffany) Neugebauer of Worthington.  Along with his parents, Arthur and Clara Good, Ken was preceded in death by sister, Violet Rolands, brothers Floyd and John Good, and niece, Sharon Thomas.  The family prefers that memorials be given to the Fairmont United Methodist Church.

Marvin W. Carney

Memorial services for Marvin W. Carney, 98, of Fairmont, MN, will be Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Burial will be held following the service in the Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at the Lakeview Funeral Home. Marvin passed away on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato, MN. The Lakeview Funeral Home of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.  Marvin W. Carney was born on June 16, 1912, in Rushmore, MN, the son of Elmer and Mary (Leibsle) Carney. Marvin began his education in Rushmore and in 1925, his family purchased a service station in Fairmont and Marvin moved with his family to Fairmont as a late teen where he attended school and graduated from high school.  On May 31, 1939, Marvin was united in marriage to Evelyn McCune in Fairmont, MN. Together the couple made their home in New York where they were blessed with a son, Jan. Together the family lived in New York and Pennsylvania before returning to Minnesota and making Fairmont their home. While living out east, Marvin worked for the railroad for twenty years as a Chief Mechanic on a Ballast Cleaner.  Upon their return to Minnesota and Fairmont, Marvin began driving truck as an owner/operator. His proudest achievement driving truck was reaching one million miles without an accident. Following his retirement, Marvin and Evelyn wintered in Texas and cherished memories made throughout the years traveling the U.S. in their camper. Marvin loved spending time with family and friends and socializing by attending dances and playing cards. Another achievement for Marvin was as a boy he was awarded his Eagle Scout badge.  Left to cherish his memory is his son, Jan Carney and wife, Gail of Mankato, MN; one sister-in-law, Susan Carney of Chicago, IL; two brothers-in-law, Jim Calkins and his wife, DeMaris, and Don Calkins and his wife, Doris; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends. In addition to his parents, Marvin is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn who passed away in October of 2009; and one brother, Arlo Carney.

Joseph “Joe” Shinsky

Burial will be held following the service in the Riverview Cemetery in Elmore, MN, with full military graveside honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post #36 and the Martin County VFW Post # 1222. Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of service beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Joseph passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday, July 21, 2010. The Lakeview Funeral Home of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.  Joseph Shinsky was born on August 27, 1921, in Northampton, PA, the son of Steve and Mary Shinsky. Joe grew up in Northampton and attended school there graduating from Northampton High School.  On October 10, 1940, Joe enlisted with the U.S. Navy. While in the Navy, he served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga during WWII as a Chief Gunners Mate. Joe also participated in the Atomic Bomb Test at Bikini.  In 1948, Joe was united in marriage to Mildred Jervis. In 1977, Mildred passed away from cancer.  On December 10, 1946, Joe was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy after serving six years. Following his honorable discharge, Joe moved to Glendale, CA, where he worked at Lockheed Aircraft. He later moved to Fairmont where he worked as a carpenter, was a manager at Simonsons Lumber, and also worked at the Coast-to-Coast store until his retirement.  In November, 1977, Joe was united in marriage to Janet Laue in Fairmont, MN.  Joe was a member of the St. John the Baptist Ukraimon Catholic Church of Northampton, PA; the Martin County VFW Post #1222, the American Legion Post #36, the National Association of Radiation Survivors, and the National Association of Atomic Veterans.  Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Janet Shinsky of Fairmont, MN; two brothers, Steve Shinsky of Palmerton, PA, and John Shinsky and wife, Lorrain of Allentown, PA; one sister, Janet Bodnar and husband, Ted of Northampton, PA; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. In addition to his parents, Steve and Mary; Joe is preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred; one sister Mary Rishko; one brother, Michael Shinksy; and two sisters-in-law, Marie Shinsky and Margret Shinsky.

Funeral service for Harold DeBoer, 93, of Fairmont, MN will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, July 23, at Bethel Evangelical Free Church in Fairmont. Burial will follow at Fairview Memorial Park in Fairmont.  Harold passed away Monday morning, July 19, 2010 at the Lakeview Methodist Healthcare Center in Fairmont. Visitation will be 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. Thursday, July 22, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.  Harold DeBoer was born on February 20, 1917 in Adams, NE, the son of Rendit and Sarah ( DeYoung) DeBoer. He attended school in Beatrice, NE. Harold was united in marriage to Gladys Mae Shaw on January 1, 1941 at his parents’ home. Harold and Gladys farmed near Welcome, MN and Mt. Lake, MN before purchasing a farm near Truman, MN. They farmed near Truman for many years and wintered in Mesa, AZ. In 1980, they retired from farming and built a house in Fairmont. Harold was a member of Bethel Evangelical Free Church and enjoyed his woodworking.  He is survived by his wife, Gladys DeBoer of Fairmont; one daughter, Arlene Downs-Arnold and her husband, Richard, of Sun City West, AZ; grandchildren, Cindy Eaton and her husband, Brian, of Eagan, MN, Roger Downs and his wife, Jane, of Decatur, IL, Tamara Downs of Van Nuyes, CA; five great grandchildren, Joseph, Natalie, Mariah, Isaiah and Grace Eaton; two brothers, Lawrence DeBoer and his wife, Lavonne, of Fairmont, Merle DeBoer and his wife, Evelyn, of Fairmont; one sister, Fern Sams of Santa Maria, CA; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Harold was preceded in death by his father, Rendit DeBoer; mother, Sarah DeBoer Laue; son, Donald DeBoer; brothers, Warren, Virgil, and one infant brother; sisters, Dorothy Peterson, Goldie Dirksen and Velma Stevens.

Services for Kelly J. Jansick, 43, of Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Fairmont, MN, will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at the Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel in Fairmont. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, July 23, 2010, at the Lakeview Funeral Home. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. Kelly passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2010, in Fargo, ND. Kelly J. Jansick, son of Larry and Margo (Lyons) Jansick, was born on April 15, 1968 in Sioux Falls, SD. Kelly lived in Omaha with his family until moving to Fairmont in 1980. After graduating from Fairmont High School, he married Amy Johnson in 1986. The couple lived in Fairmont where he owned and operated Fairmont Vacuum Center. After selling Fairmont Vacuum Center he and his family moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where he owned a distriburtorship for HMI Industries for several years. Kelly has made Phoenix, AZ his home for the last 12 years. He had most recently worked as a recruiter for Trent Nasser in Fargo, ND. Kelly enjoyed coaching little league baseball, golfing and camping with his sons. He especially loved going to spring training baseball in Phoenix and watching the Minnesota Vikings.  Left to cherish his memory include his sons, Dustin Jansick of Sioux Falls, SD, and Ross Jansick of St. Paul, MN; parents, Larry and Margo Jansick of Phoenix; sister, Jessica Thoms and her husband, Michael of Phoenix; brother Steven Jansick of Phoenix; nephew, Andrew Jansick; nieces, Erica, Chloe and Madelyn all of Phoenix; Also from Phoenix is his fiancee Monica Ortiz. Robert L. Mensch

A Praise Service for Robert L. Mensch, 73, of Fairmont, MN, will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, July 22, 2010, at the Fairmont Baptist Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. A private family burial is planned in Fairmont.  Robert passed away on Friday evening, July 16, 2010, at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. The Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.  Robert Leon Mensch, son of Herbert and Dorothy (Leeman) was born on June 18, 1937, in Mankato, MN. At that time, his parents resided in Nashville Township. They moved to the North Star Farm in Fraser Township in 1941 where Robert lived the remainder of his childhood. Robert attended District 54 Country School for four years. He graduated from Welcome High School in 1955 and Iowa State University in 1959 with a B.S. Degree in Agricultural Engineering. Robert received his Master’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1962. Robert also served as an officer in the United States Army Reserve (Corps of Engineers).  On August 5, 1960, Robert was united in marriage to Jane Marie Gilmore in Fairmont, MN. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Karen and Susan. Robert and Jane shared nearly 50 years together.  Robert was employed by the Department of Agricultural Engineering at Kansas State University as an instructor from 1962 to 1968, doing teaching and research. He and Jane then moved to Fairmont, MN where he established Mensch Engineering, which catered to feedlot design and construction. He was the first full-time self-employed consulting agricultural engineer in Minnesota for many years.  In 1977 he accepted a position as Farm Structures Specialist with the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for a pig farm redevelopment project in Singapore. He returned to Mensch Engineering in 1984. Since 1990 most of his work was related to feedlots throughout Minnesota, helping hundreds of farmers prepare plans for feedlot permits from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. He served on several MPCA advisory committees.  Robert had a passion for teaching, whether in the classroom, one-on-one with clients or mentoring younger consulting engineers. He was a member of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers for 50 years and a licenced professional engineer for 42 years. As a volunteer, Robert did engineering for Heritage Acres, Martin County Fair and the Red Rock Center. He was on the Board of Supervisors of the Martin Soil and Water Conservation District from 1973 until 1977.  Robert was a member, deacon and treasurer of Fairmont Baptist Church for many years. His favorite hymn was “Because He Lives, I Can Face Tomorrow.”  Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Jane Marie Mensch of Fairmont; daughters, Karen (Aldo) Senne of Welcome, MN, Susan Mensch of Fairmont; granddaughters, Christina Senne of Brainerd, MN, Melinda Senne of Welcome and her fiancé, Joe Collins of Prior Lake; sister, Rachel (Ken) Ellingson of Vadnais Heights, MN; brother-in-law, John Gilmore of Highlands Ranch, CO; and nephews, Jeffery (Christine) Ellingson of St. Paul and Ericlee (Dorina) Gilmore of Fresno, CA. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Dorothy Mensch.

Memorial service for Jeannette Horn, 90, of Fairmont will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 20, at the United Methodist Church in Fairmont. Burial will be at a later date in the Osage City Cemetery in Osage, IA. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is handling the arrangements for the family. Jeannette passed away on Friday, July 16 at her home in Fairmont.  Jeannette (Woodward) Horn was born on November 4, 1919 in Charles City, IA, the daughter of Melburn and Vernice (Kearney) Woodward. She attended country school near Osage and then graduated from Osage High School. After high school she attended Iowa State University and then graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1943 with a degree in medical technology. She was united in marriage to Tracy Horn on September 7, 1942 at her parents’ home near Osage. After Tracy was discharged from the service they moved to Fairmont where they raised their family. Jeannette was a very devoted and proud wife, mother and grandmother who loved to watch her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren grow. She was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority, Eastern Star, American Legion Auxillary Post 36, United Methodist Church in Fairmont, Fairmont Community Hospital Auxiliary and the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center Auxiliary. Some of Jeannette’s interests include: sewing, needlework, knitting, golf, gardening, reading and spending time with family and friends.  She will be cherished by her husband of 68 years, Tracy Horn; three children, Bruce Horn (Carol), Robert Horn (Judy), Barb Tofte (Kirk); five grandchildren, Heather, Alyssa (Troy), Jon (Kristin), Sarah (Marie), Susie (Adam); four great grandchildren; one sister, Mary Lou Dale; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.

Funeral services for Kathryn O. Roper, 92, of Fairmont, MN, will be Monday, July 19, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Burial will be held following the service in the Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. Visitation will be Sunday, July 18, 2010, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Kathryn passed away Thursday, July 15, 2010, at the Friendship Manor Nursing Home in Shakopee, MN.  Kathryn O. (Range) Roper was born on December 28, 1917, in Crystal Lake, IA, the daughter of Peter and Meta (Reiter) Range. As a young girl, the family moved to Minnesota where Kathryn received her education and graduated from Pleasant Mount Township Public School. In 1932, Kathryn was confirmed at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Truman, MN.  On January 4, 1947, Kathryn was united in marriage to Ronald Roper at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Together the couple made their home in Fairmont where they were blessed with two children, Dean and Kay.  Kathryn worked as a waitress at Interlaken Park, a clerk at Mocol’s Grocery Story, and also as a clerk at Sears for 22 years.  In her spare time, Kathryn enjoyed traveling with her husband, Ronald. She cherished time spent with family and friends and looked forward to their visits and conversations over the phone. Her zest for life will be greatly missed by those that loved her and called her friend.  Left to cherish her memory are her children, Dean Roper and his wife, Kathryn of Shakopee, MN, and Kay Hagen and husband, James of Eagan, MN; grandchildren, Wes Roper, Todd (Tety) Roper, Brian (Sarah) Hagen, and Jill (Ron) Roper-Vaughan; one brother, Melvin Range and his wife, Rosemary of Burnsville, MN; three sisters-in-law, Arlene Range, Viola Range, and Casey Roper; one brother-in-law, John Roper and his wife, Donna; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.
